Course Overview:
The WJEC Eduqas GCE AS in Geography enables students to explore the dynamic interactions between people, places, and environments. The course combines both physical and human geography and encourages fieldwork and the development of essential geographical skills. Students will investigate global challenges such as tectonic hazards, coastal processes, and changing places.
Course Components:
Component 1: Changing Landscapes (60% of qualification)
Written Examination (2 hours 15 minutes)
Section A: Choice between Coastal or Glaciated Landscapes.
Section B: Tectonic Hazards, exploring earthquakes and volcanoes.
Section C: Challenges in the 21st Century, linking knowledge across the course.
Component 2: Changing Places (40% of qualification)
Written Examination (1 hour 15 minutes)
Section A: Study of Changing Places, including the nature and meaning of places.
Section B: Fieldwork Investigation, assessing skills in physical and human geography fieldwork.
Key Topics:
Physical Geography: Coastal and glaciated landscapes, tectonic hazards, and related processes.
Human Geography: Changing places, the impact of globalisation, urban and rural change.
Fieldwork: A minimum of two days of fieldwork, involving both physical and human geography.
Skills Developed:
Fieldwork Skills: Investigating geographical questions through real-world observations and data collection.
Analytical Skills: Interpreting and evaluating geographical data, using both quantitative and qualitative methods.
Geographical Understanding: Applying concepts such as sustainability, globalisation, and resilience to real-world scenarios.
Progression:
This AS Geography qualification provides a foundation for further study at A-Level or in university, and is relevant for careers in urban planning, environmental science, and international development.
