WJEC Eduqas

Description

The WJEC Eduqas GCE AS Biology course provides an extensive and detailed study of biological concepts, including the internal workings of organisms, their interdependence in ecology, and the ethical considerations surrounding genetics and environmental impact. The qualification encourages learners to develop an appreciation of scientific methods, critical thinking, and practical skills through theoretical and experimental learning. The course consists of two main components:

  1. Component 1: Basic Biochemistry and Cell Organisation

    • Topics include biochemistry, cell structure, membranes, enzymes, nucleic acids, and genetic information transfer.

    • Practical skills include food tests, microscopy, and working with biological molecules.

  2. Component 2: Biodiversity and Physiology of Body Systems

    • Topics include biodiversity, gas exchange, transport mechanisms, and nutritional adaptations.

    • Learners engage in practical activities such as dissection, microscopy, and investigations into plant and animal physiology.

Throughout the course, learners will use theories, models, and experimental data to form scientific explanations. The curriculum also includes mathematical applications such as statistical analysis, unit conversion, and data interpretation. Practical work is an integral component, enhancing both understanding and enjoyment of the subject, with an emphasis on developing investigative skills and applying knowledge to real-world contexts.

The course ultimately aims to foster a deep understanding of biology, equipping learners with the skills and knowledge to pursue further studies or careers in the biological sciences.
