Description

The WJEC Eduqas GCE AS in Film Studies explores a range of films, from classic Hollywood to contemporary European and American independent films. It combines critical film analysis with practical production skills, teaching students how films are made, how to analyze them, and how to create their own work. Students will study key film elements like cinematography, editing, sound, and narrative construction.

Course Components:

  1. Component 1: American Film (35% of qualification)

    • Written Exam (1.5 hours)

    • Hollywood 1930-1990: Compare two Hollywood films, one from 1930-1960 and one from 1961-1990.

    • Contemporary American Independent Film: Study one post-2012 American independent film.

  2. Component 2: European Film (35% of qualification)

    • Written Exam (1.5 hours)

    • British Film: Study two recent British films.

    • Non-English European Film: Study one non-English language European film.

  3. Component 3: Production (30% of qualification)

    • Non-exam Assessment

    • Create either a film extract (2.5-3.5 minutes) or a screenplay (1200-1400 words) with a storyboard. Submit an evaluative analysis (1000-1250 words) comparing the production with professional films.
