Description

The WJEC Eduqas AS in Law is designed to provide learners with a foundational understanding of the English legal system, incorporating both public and private law, and equipping them with the necessary skills to pursue further studies in law or related disciplines. This qualification is suitable for learners aiming to develop their analytical, reasoning, and legal skills.

Aims and Objectives:

  • Develop knowledge of the English legal system, its structures, and relationships with the European Union.

  • Study key areas of law, including criminal law, contract law, tort law, and human rights law.

  • Apply legal reasoning to hypothetical scenarios, using appropriate legal terminology.

  • Enhance the ability to construct, evaluate, and communicate legal arguments based on case law, statutes, and legal principles.

Qualification Overview:

  • Duration: Teaching from 2017, assessment from 2018.

  • Assessment Components:

    • Component 1: The Nature of Law and the English Legal System (50% of the qualification)

    • Component 2: Understanding Substantive Law (50% of the qualification)

Key Topics Covered:

  1. The Nature of Law: Examines law-making processes, the relationship between law and justice, judicial precedent, statutory interpretation, and legal personnel.

  2. Public and Private Law: Focuses on criminal law and human rights law (public law), and contract law or tort law (private law).

  3. Legal Skills: Involves using legal principles to analyze case scenarios and constructing coherent legal arguments.

Assessment:

  • Component 1: Written examination (1 hour 30 minutes) covering law-making, judicial processes, and the English legal system.

  • Component 2: Written examination (1 hour 30 minutes) focusing on private and public law, with questions on law of contract, tort, criminal law, or human rights law.

Grading:

  • Grades awarded from A to E, with U for unclassified results.

  • Candidates must resit all components in the same series if they wish to retake the qualification.
